Can we remove Lichen?

At Aqua Smart we also provide a Lichen removal service for your home solar panels.

To remove lichen from your solar panel we will need to get up close and personal to your solar panels. We will either erect a portable scaffolding tower or use a cheery picker. Whichever method is most suitable for you property and its surrounding. We will then apply a bio degradable chemical, allowing to soak and soften the lichen, then use a plastic no scratch tool to remove the lichen. We will then wash down all the panels with our ultra-pure water, ensuring nothing is left on the panels.

Why do my solar panels need cleaning?

Solar panels work by allowing light into the cells within the panel. When solar panels get dirty, it creates shading on the cells which then reduces output. Solar panels can get dirty from, dust traffic film, bee pollen, bird dropping and other forms of pollutants.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

As a general guide, it is recommended to have your solar panels professionally cleaned at least once a year. However, a visual inspection every few months to check for significant buildup of things like dust, traffic film, bee pollen and bird droppings is advised . If you notice a decrease in energy production or the panels appear visibly dirty, then this is a good indication that it’s time for a cleaning service.

What will happen if I don’t clean my solar panels?

Your solar panels will begin to grow lichen on them after a period of time, this creates hotspots and can reduce output. Lichen is difficult and costly to remove from solar panels due to access issues. It is much cheaper to clean your solar panels regularly than it is to have the lichen grow and have need to have it removed. If left, hotspots caused by lichen will cause cell deterioration and lead to eventual failure. This will render the panel useless and then it will need to be replaced.
